More on 'free' work

Well written article about the dangers (both to clients and designers) of free, pro-bono and spec work – You get what you pay for by Emily Lewis

There remains a perception outside the web industry that a web site is intangible and, as such, not really a ‘product’. This same ignorance leads many laypeople to also assume that it is easy to ‘throw a site together’.

Bloody good point.

For any designers who are struggling to ‘justify’ (as if we should have to justify not wanting to work without pay – mutter mutter…) a resistance to spec work, a useful resource is the AIGA Position on spec work which includes well written letters outlining objections to spec and competition work.

Other designers perspective on spec work:

Never work for free

Don’t design on spec

Designified articles relevant to this moan:

Types of clients & what not to read

I’m sorry – you want what?
